Our next Coach Trip is to The Eden Project in Cornwall
Departing at 7.45 am from the village hall on October 9th (Tuesday)
The Eden Project nr St Austell is a Living Theatre of Plants and People — an educational charity that explores how people can work together and with nature to change things for the better. Trek through the world’s largest indoor rainforest, take in the sights and smells of the Mediterranean Biome, and explore the huge outdoor gardens.

This month’s regular event is a talk entitled ‘From Plant to Plate’ by Sue Applegate of Hurstbrook Plants
August 22nd 2018 (Wednesday) at 7.30pm, Uplyme Village Hall
‘From Plant to Plate’ is an illustrated talk of the work within the UK Fresh Produce Industry to supply Farm Assured food to Farmers Markets and Supermarkets. Challenges of the future such as Food Security to provide for a huge increase in World Population Growth, Climate Change and Efficient Management of Water are also identified. A selection of seasonal, UK grown produce will be available for sale following the talk.
Our next Coach Trip is to Special Plants and Iford Manor
Departing at 9.00 from the village hall on September 12th (Wednesday)
Special Plants nr Bath. On a steep hill at the top of an idyllic valley, the garden (designed by Derry Watkins’ architect husband Peter Clegg) is built on several levels with graceful flowing curves, and filled with Derry’s favourite plants. Although the garden is on heavy clay, D’s love for Mediterranean plants meant that two gravel gardens were also created to satisfy her passion. Along with ponds with trickling water between and a bog garden, there is a vegetable garden, orchard and woodland walk with a magic carpet bridge that ripples over a tiny stream. Guided tour included.
Iford Manor nr Bath is a Grade I garden designed by Harold Peto, who trained as an architect and had Edwin Lutyens as an assistant. After several visits to Italy, Peto became fascinated by Italianate gardens and combined his knowledge of practical gardening with an architect’s eye. In 1899 he bought Iford Manor (an 18th century house) where he transformed its grounds into his Italian ideal, where flowers occupy a secondary place amongst the cypresses, broad walks, statues, arcades and pools.

Our next Coach Trip is to Taunton Flower Show Departing at 9.15 from the village hall on August 3rd (Friday)
The Taunton Flower Show has been running since 1831, and has all the elements one would expect – show gardens, competitive classes for plants, produce and crafts, a floral marquee, trade stands and events in the arena through the day. We are going on the Friday, the first of the two days, to see the displays at their best.

The rose-themed 89th Summer Show of the Uplyme & Lyme Regis Horticultural Society was held on a lovely sunny Saturday afternoon.

Although entries in the competition classes were slightly down this year (which the committee ascribes to a difficult growing season), the marquee was still full of exhibits.

Local horticulturalist Anne Swithinbank from BBC’s Gardeners’ Question Time opened the show, and hosted a question and answer session on the hall patio, before presenting trophies at the end of the afternoon.

Have you remembered the 2018 Summer Show and Country Fayre?
On Saturday July 14th from 1pm-5pm
To be opened by well-known local gardener, broadcaster and writer Anne Swithinbank. Rose themed classes in the Horticultural Show, an audience with Anne Swithinbank (questions and answers), games, live music and entertainment, steam train rides, ponies and llamas, food and craft stalls, country skills demonstrations, sideshows, games, and refreshments.
All afternoon on Uplyme playing field, in the big marquee and in the village hall.
“On the afternoons of 16th and 17th June we will be opening about 25 private gardens to raise money for our local Cerne Valley Scout Group and for Dorset County Hospital Cancer Appeal. Gardens will be open from 2-6pm.
There is good free parking (DT2 7GD) open from 11am, excellent plant stall and teas available in the church and from village businesses. Adult tickets (allowing entry to all gardens) are £7 and accompanied children are free. This is a wonderful opportunity to share our historic village and we hope you will be able to attend this quintessential English Event.”
All you have to do is tell us about your garden or community space and if you can, send us some pictures too!
There are several categories available to enter: Large, Medium, Small, Rented or Community. We are also looking out for new, innovative ways to do things in the garden!
Once you enter we will get in touch to give you a date when our judges will visit you to score your garden. We give feedback to all gardens once the competition is finished.
The competition is sponsored by the GARDENS GROUP and will culminate in an AWARDS EVENING AT CASTLE GARDENS, SHERBORNE IN JULY which every competition applicant is invited to. Winners of each category will receive a wooden winner’s plaque and a bag of goodies from the Gardens Group.
This year our speaker at the awards evening is NEIL LUCAS from KNOLL GARDENS talking about his experience of wildlife friendly or ‘naturalistic’ gardening at Knoll Gardens. Neil is the leading expert in grasses in the UK and has been on the committee for the RHS for a number of years and is sure to give an entertaining talk!
